Life360 is a real-time location sharing application that enables family members and close contacts to coordinate and monitor each other's whereabouts through a shared private group known as a Circle. Members who have consented to participate can view each other's current positions at any time.

Real-time location visibility forms the foundation of the app's experience. By providing continuous position data, Life360 enables precise awareness of where family members are throughout the day—useful for parents tracking children, coordinating meetups, or maintaining general awareness of loved ones' activities.

The app retains location history, organizing members' movements by day. Each daily entry shows where people have been and how long they spent at each location, creating a detailed timeline of movement patterns. This view allows users to reference past movements or confirm when someone was at a particular location.

Place Alerts extend location monitoring by enabling proactive notifications. Users can designate frequently visited locations—such as home, school, or work—as saved places and configure automatic alerts when Circle members arrive at or leave them. Instead of manually checking the app, users receive push notifications for these arrivals and departures. The number of saved places varies by membership tier.

For emergencies, the SOS Alert feature broadcasts a user's location to all Circle members and designated emergency contacts, enabling rapid response. Crash detection technology identifies collisions at speeds above 40 kilometers per hour using device sensors, automatically alerting emergency contacts with the user's precise location.

Battery status monitoring is integrated throughout the system. The app displays each Circle member's battery level and sends low battery alerts when devices are running critically low. This awareness helps coordinate with family members whose devices may soon become unavailable.

Driver Reports assess vehicle operation by monitoring excessive speed, mobile phone usage while driving, hard braking, and rapid acceleration. These metrics combine into a driver score for each member, offering insight into driving patterns and safety—particularly relevant for families with teenage drivers.

Tile Bluetooth tracker integration extends location tracking beyond people to objects. Users can attach Tile trackers to keys, wallets, phones, or other items and locate them through Life360, combining device location services with object tracking in a single interface.

Life360 operates through a subscription model with three membership tiers. Silver provides seven days of location history, five saved places with unlimited alerts, family driving summaries, and SOS Help Alerts. Gold offers thirty days of location history, unlimited place alerts, individual driver reports, and crash detection with emergency dispatch coordination. Platinum includes breakdown assistance, identity theft protection, disaster response coordination, and medical assistance programs. A seven-day free trial is available for evaluating premium features.

Continuous background location services required for real-time updates and collision detection substantially drain device battery, particularly if the app runs persistently throughout the day.
